Cara Landers, a gym teacher at Stephen Foster School 67, knew her students loved technology and that adding it to her physical education classes would be beneficial, but her she didn’t have the resources for a computer in her classroom
“Our school has almost 600 students who love Physical Education! I see every student twice a week. They are curious, enthusiastic, hard-working and respectful. They come to Physical Education willing to work hard at whatever unit we’re doing,” she says.
Landers pursued DonorsChoose.org funding to put a computer in her classroom so students could keep the music and videos they use in class readily available, record their scores, track their heart rates and graph their progress. Through DonorsChoose.org funding and a matching grant from the IPS Education Foundation, she was able to get a laptop computer for her classroom, which has made her students very excited about coming to her class.
“They love to be in charge of the music for the day. They pick the songs they love,” she says. “I have students that may not be able to take part in class because of a medical reason that can help with other projects on the computer when the it is not being used for music or other things.”
Now, her students are excited to come to class and check their fitness progress. Students are able to take short quizzes on the computer, and Landers is able to post daily lessons without being constantly asked what the classroom agenda is. The laptop helps her classes run more smoothly.
“My experience working with DonorsChoose.org was wonderful! I wish I had done this years ago!” she says. “My students see I have more time to be able to find more things for them to do so I don’t spend my whole prep and lunch working. They love the fact that I can look for more things to get them with DonorsChoose.org.”
Landers is constantly looking for more programs and activities to enrich her students’ experience and excitement for learning, which makes her students even more excited about what they’re learning in class. Without DonorsChoose.org and matching grants from the IPS Education Foundation, these resources would not be available to Landers’ students. Because of the availability of resources and their teacher’s creativity, IPS students have another reason to get excited about their gym class.
