We are reaching out to you today as a former friend of Pamela Gemmer. As you know, she was extremely committed to embracing and celebrating Latino culture in Indianapolis and abroad, and we miss her warm personality and incredible commitment to serving our community.
Pamelita’s passion for Mexican and Latino culture started at a very young age. When she was six years old, her father gave her a world map that he hung up in her room. A few months later, he found her staring at the map with a suitcase and teddy bear in hand. He asked her, “Where are you going?” She responded, “To Mexico!” This encounter would foretell her future legacy. Pam lived in Mexico City for 37 years, where she fell in love and raised her family. Upon returning home to Indiana, she began working at Crispus Attucks High School where she, along with the Mexican Consulate, began an exchange program with schools in Tlaxcala. Eighteen years later, this program continues today!
Since Pam left us, many friends and family have asked how to make a contribution in her honor to further support her legacy. This April, the partner schools in Mexico will be sending 25 students to study with IPS students here in Indianapolis. As Board Members of the IPS Education Foundation, we are currently working to raise $3,500 in Pam’s name to help this program accomplish their mission of hospitably welcoming these 25 honored guests.
Looking at the larger picture, the entire exchange program requires $20,000 annually to make the program equitable and accessible to our students. Crispus Attucks is a Title I School, meaning that the majority of the students are low income and would likely not be afforded the opportunities provided to them for cultural immersion without the invaluable program created by our Pam. Any monetary donations exceeding our current $3,500 goal will be used to support the overall program, including sending our student delegation to Tlaxcala next Spring.
To help support Pam’s legacy of providing incredible cultural opportunities for our students and families, please consider making a donation to the IPS Education Foundation in her memory. You can do this by clicking here and in the field for “Which area you would like to fund?” select “Memory of Pam Gemmer”. You can also make a check out to IPSEF and send it to 120 E. Walnut St. Indianapolis, IN 46204 with Pam’s name in the “For” line.
We look forward to working with you to ensure that Pam’s legacy lives on and thrives!
